Collection
Agencies Much of the debt collection in the United States performed by collection agencies. Collection agencies come in many varieties. Some agencies may be local "merchant's cooperatives", which may be associated with the local "credit bureau". These agencies may collect only accounts against consumers in a single community.Others may be specialized commercial agencies which collect nationwide, or internationally. The type of agency which is more suitable for a particular business may depend upon factors such as the geographical sales or service area of the business, the type of industry and product or service. When an extension of consumer credit is involved, other issues may require consideration.Trade Organizations and Associations Both creditors and collection agencies should discuss and understand their respective roles and duties concerning compliance with consumer protection laws. The American Collectors Association, Inc., is one of the leading national organizations for collection agencies. Associated Credit Bureaus is a highly effective legislative organization. To its great credit, this organization has provided guidance to its member consumer reporting agencies through strong educational programs.
