Court System:

 

The State of Pennsylvania operates under a Unified Judicial system which consists of the Supreme Court, Superior Court, Commonwealth Court, Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia Municipal Court, Pittsburgh Magistrates Court, Traffic Court of Philadelphia and District Justices.  (42 Pa.C.S. § 301.)  Credit and collection cases are generally determined by the Court of Common Pleas and District Justices.

    Court of Common Pleas:  The Court of Common Pleas has exclusive and original jurisdiction of all civil actions.  (42 Pa.C.S. § 931.)

    District Justices:  District Justices generally has jurisdiction over civil money claims wherein the sum demanded does not exceed $8,000, exclusive of interest and costs.  (42 Pa.C.S. § 1515(3).)
