The Clean Air Act of 1970 established responsibilities for government and private industry to reduce emissions from vehicles, factories, and other sources. Imported motor vehicles are subject to safety standards under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as revised. Manufacturers are required to meet certain mileage requirements on the vehicles which they manufacture. The Federal Odometer Law, prohibits tampering with odometers. Regulation M, is designed to ensure that lessees of personal property receive disclosures to enable comparison with other leases, to limit balloon payments in consumer lease transactions, and to provide for accurate disclosure of lease terms in advertising. A federal law, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, governs certain consumer product warranties. State laws covering warranties of automobiles to consumers are often referred to as "lemon laws." Car dealers who sell more than five used vehicles in a 12-month period must comply with the Federal Trade Commission’s Used Car Rule
